2 Person Photography Exhibition
Keavy Handley-Byrne and Margaret Murphy
gallery hours 8/16 - 8/18 1-6 pm
Keavy Handley-Byrne is a photographic artist living and working between Providence, Rhode Island and Brooklyn, New York. Their most recent book, Small Magics, investigates small, largely insignificant visual moments and incidences of light and dark that bring a small jolt of happiness to their daily existence, captured through their cell phone camera. Living in New York City, they learned to train their lens on subjects that brought them visual pleasure during their commute, usually on foot. Small Magics collects these amuse-bouche moments into a sequence that allows the viewer something small to power through the slog of daily life.
HAPPY2BEHERE explores Los Angeles through Margaret Murphy's camera phone lens as she adjusts to life in the new home she moved to in October of 2016. Growing up in Washington, DC, she is enamored with the light and indigenous plant life of the West Coast. Capturing a type of nostalgia for a place one has never been, the mid-century color palette, architecture, signage and automobiles so characteristic of Los Angeles play starring roles in her pictures. HAPPY2BEHERE is a collection of first-time experience, excitement of visual discovery and appreciation of the unexpected in day-to-day life.
